While most students across the country are still reveling in the limitless freedom that is summer, some have seen the end of this year’s summer break and are heading back to the classroom. Students in many Mississippi districts are starting classes this week, and students in some Atlanta districts return to class on August 9th, which are just a few examples of school districts nationwide that have decided to open their doors earlier this year.
So what’s the reasoning behind these early start times? Some argue that they give students more time to prepare for standardized tests, which are often held statewide on the same date or dates. Mississippi moved its tests back one week from 2012 to 2013, meaning an earlier start time means more days of class before students have to take the test. Another reason is to keep students from getting bored over summer break, or to get them back into the classroom before forgetting what they learned last year.
Reactions to the earlier start times are mixed. Some parents are glad that their children are back in school instead of playing video games all day, but others are concerned about the lack of evidence for improved academic performance as a result of starting the school year earlier. In addition, starting the school year earlier can result in increased utility costs for schools, which must air condition their facilities during one of the hottest months of the years. Summer tourism industries are also affected by the start time, as family vacations drop off once school starts.
While Mississippi’s schools will be starting early this year, students can breathe a sigh of relief, as the legislature passed a law last year that will go into effect in 2014, stating that public schools can start no earlier than the third Monday in August. Other states that enforce more traditional school start dates include Texas, Virginia, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, among others, and many more states are considering similar legislation.
